Unemployment rose to 8.4% in April-June quarter

According to INE, the rate rose 1.5 percentage points in twelve months and 0.4 percentage points regarding the previous quarter. "The further expansion of the workforce in respect of employment in twelve months is a behavior that is accentuated in the current measurement, ranging from 4.6% and 2.9% respectively.

There is in turn an increase in the number of unemployed and a sharp decline in people who are outside the workforce, "said the INE in its statement.

In twelve months, the labor participation rate increased from 54.5% to 56.0% and the occupancy rate of 50.7% to 51.3% in the same period. The biggest impact on the overall figures comes from the dynamism of the incorporation of women into the labour market, observed since mid-2007.

In turn, the unemployment rate rose in both men and women and across all age groups, although the largest increases were recorded in women and young people aged 15-24.

According category of occupation and industry, employees and sectors of Trade and Financial Services are the ones that generate the greatest impetus to employment growth in twelve months.

The quarterly variations showed a smaller decline in occupancy (-0.3%) and a further increase of the unemployed (5.6%), with respect to what was observed in the same quarter of previous years. Agriculture, and Transportation and Communications concentrated the greatest loss of jobs. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate will be located at 7.8%.
